About SOPA

The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) is a Hong Kong-based not-for-profit organization that was founded in 1982 to champion freedom of the press, promote excellence in journalism and endorse best practices for publishers operating  in the Asia-Pacific region.

Today, SOPA is the voice of Asia’s media and publishing industry, and continues to work to uphold media standards and freedoms while celebrating and supporting professional journalism and publishing. The SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence are the annual flagship awards, serving as a regional benchmark for quality, professional journalism.

Welcome to the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA)

SOPA was established in 1982 to recognize and celebrate the highest standards of journalistic quality and integrity in Asia. Today, the SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence are regarded as the gold standard against which Asia’s best journalists and publishers are measured.

Our commitment to editorial excellence is evidenced through a range of activities and initiatives:

  • SOPA stands as a vocal and passionate proponent for freedom of the press regionally.
  • We advocate for best business practices that support and sustain the publishing industry.
  • SOPA hosts topical events to promote industry dialogue, education and innovation through its Media Insider Series, as well as forums that unite and strengthen our publishing community. This includes outreach and initiatives targeting Asia’s next generation of journalists through partnerships with universities including the HKBU-SOPA Award Winners Forum.
  • We embrace the promotion of technological advances and innovation that best serve the information needs of our membership.

The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) exists to promote excellence in journalism and best practices across all local and regional publishing platforms in Asia Pacific

SOPA is dedicated to:

  • Freedom of the Press across the region.
  • Promoting and sharing best business and operating practices for the benefit of members, their readers and customers through understanding and embracing emerging platforms and technologies.
  • Developing the skills of media professionals across the region.
  • Bringing together media owners, marketing agencies, business partners and clients for the mutual benefit of the professional publishing industry and its stakeholders in the region.
