Over 280 guests attended the Editorial Awards dinner at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center on June 10th. International publishers including Bloomberg, International New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and TIME Asia were among those in attendance along with some local publishers from Hong Kong and from around the region, including The Myanmar Times, Nikkei Asian Review and The Phnom Penh Post.
Mr. Philip Bowring was inducted as SOPA’s first ever Honorary Member. Mr. Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Media was the guest of honor interviewed by Hugo Restall of The Wall Street Journal. A total of 97 SOPA Awards were presented. The Journalist of the Year was awarded to Ms. Nancy Carvajal of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

SOPA rededicate Children’s library in Yuen Long
The Society of Publishers in Asia donated a new set of Chinese and English books to children at the Yuen Long Social Service Centre on Friday, April 24, 2015.
This re-dedication of the children’s library reflects SOPA’s continuing commitment to improving literacy in Asia.
Journalist of the Year
Nancy Carvajal, Philippine Daily Inquirer
The 2015 Journalist of the Year was awarded to Nancy Carvajal of Philippine Daily Inquirer. Judges commented “Courageous and excellent work in exposing official corruption in a country where journalists face death and physical attack. Ms Carvajal shows that power of good journalism in promoting transparency and accountability in high places. Nancy Carvajal deserves the top honor due to the especially challenging circumstances in which she works in the Philippines”. Congratulations Nancy!

The Commercial Value of Press Freedom
On March 25th at the Bloomberg Auditorium, SOPA hosted a Media Insider breakfast to consider “The Commercial Value of Press Freedom”. Moderated by Robin Hicks of Mumbrella, the panel included Seraphina Wong, Global Advertising Head of Asia Pacific at UBS; Angela Mackay, Managing Director at Financial Times Asia; Zoher Abdoolcarim, Editor, Time Asia.
