Record Number of 580 Entries Received for The Society of Publishers in Asia 2012 Awards


Hong Kong, May 3, 2012
– The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) is delighted to announce that this year’s SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence has attracted a record number of 580 entries from across Asia, including Hong Kong, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and India. This represents an increase of about 20% over last year’s 480 entries.

Over the years, the SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence has been widely regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in the publishing industry’s calendar and brings the whole sector together to celebrate outstanding editorial content and creativity in Asia.

This year. a total of 268 Chinese entries and 312 English entries are vying for the Awards. The awards are grouped under 3 categories, recognizing English language regional and local publications and Chinese language publications. The judging process is currently in progress and the winners will be revealed at the prize presentation dinner on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at the JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong.

The 14th SOPA Awards covers 17 categories that reflect Asia-Pacific’s vibrant editorial scene. This year, two brand new categories were introduced–“Excellence in Lifestyle Coverage” and “Excellence in Explanatory Reporting”.

Each category will be evaluated by a panel of judges appointed by the Awards Administrators, The Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC) of the Hong Kong University. The judges comprise journalists, designers and photo editors from leading publications, as well as notable academics from the media departments of prestigious universities. The judging panel is under the stewardship of Head Judge, Professor Rusty Todd of the JSMC
