SOPA Urges Myanmar Military to Reverse Information Crackdown

Early this week, the Myanmar military staged a coup against a democratically elected civilian government and arrested leading politicians, including Aung San Suu Kyi. Amid protests in Yangon and strikes by healthcare staff, the military has disrupted internet and television services and today ordered local telecom firms to block access to Facebook until February 7, hindering the free flow of information and the work of local and international publishers in Myanmar.

SOPA condemns the military’s actions to suppress opposition to their actions and prevent the people of Myanmar from freely expressing their opinion.  SOPA calls on the military to immediately restore full access to all information sources and platforms throughout the country.
