The SOPA 2014 Awards for Editorial Excellence launches call for entries

SOPA stepping into 16th anniversary and form two more categories

“Excellence in Reporting on Women’s Issues” and “Excellence in Digital News”

Hong Kong, February 4, 2014 – The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA), an organization dedicated to best practices in professional publishing, is pleased to announce the launch of the “SOPA 2014 Awards for Editorial Excellence”. The premier publishing awards represent the most outstanding journalistic accolade in Asia. Stepping in the 16th anniversary, SOPA forms 2 more new categories for the awards for all publication to join, which are the “Excellence in Reporting on Women’s Issues” and “Excellence in Digital News”.

Established in 1999, the awards highlight editorial excellence in both traditional and new media, and are designed to honor and encourage editorial vitality and innovation throughout the region, and welcome entries from English and Chinese-language publications for Asian journalism. The awards cover a broad range of categories reflecting Asia’s diverse geo-political environment and vibrant editorial scene. We are very please to notice the valuable benchmark that SOPA awards set for the industry, and how the world has been influenced by them. We are very excited this year and looking forward to receive more brilliant pieces from all over the world based on last year’s huge success also.

“The SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence strive to promote exceptional entries and design in the journalism industry, ranging from best publications in Asia-Pacific to websites well known in the world, to recognize and encourage talents for better hard work,” said Tom Leander, Chairman of the SOPA Editorial Awards Sub-committee.

“We noticed about the major changing trend in journalism, that publications now have more than traditional channels to express their point of view, entries posting on websites or social media are requiring more precise and fast work from writers and reporters. We are happy to reward the ones putting in effort for it and that’s why we add the “Excellence in Digital News” in the first place. We understand the evolving situation can be tough during the adapting process, but I believe with all the gifted talents we have, this will not be a difficult task for all of us.”

The SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence has consistently secured judges comprised of journalists, designers and photo editors from many of the region’s leading newspapers and consumer and trade magazines as well as notable academics from the journalism and media departments of prestigious universities.

Judging for the 2014 Awards will be conducted by a team of more than 100 international judges stationed across the globe. Judging will be led by Head of Judges, Jeffrey Timmermans, Director of the undergraduate journalism program at The University of Hong Kong. Mr. Timmermans has more than a decade of experience in Asia as a financial and business journalist, having worked as Managing Editor for Dow Jones Newswires in Hong Kong and Singapore.

SOPA has begun accepting entries from journalists across the region for the SOPA 2014 Awards for Editorial Excellence.  Entries can be submitted from now until 6pm February 28, 2014. To encourage various entries from both large and small publications, entries are classified by circulation size and language type – either English or Chinese. All entries submission and payments will only be accepted online since 2013.
